14 Essential Guide to T-money: Public Transport in Korea for Travelers

🚌 [Essential Guide for Foreign Visitors to Korea] Mastering T-money: The Core of Korean Public Transportation

📌 3-Line Core Summary

1. Right after arriving at the airport, it is safest to get a physical T-money card + Korean Won cash at a convenience store.
2. For both buses and subways, you must tag your card when getting off to receive transfer discounts.
3. If you are pulling a large suitcase, use the subway elevator routes or taxis instead of city buses!

✈️ Your First Step Right After Arriving at Incheon Airport

If you need to take the Airport Railroad Express (AREX) or an airport limousine bus to downtown right after arriving at Incheon International Airport, head straight to a convenience store inside the airport to purchase a physical T-money card and charge it with cash immediately. The moment you buy and top up the card, you can use it right away to board the subway, making it the fastest and most convenient option. For iPhone users or foreign tourists who find complex app setups troublesome, a physical card is much better for your mental well-being.

❓ 1. What is T-money?

Cash payments are almost impossible on buses and subways in Korea; they can only be used by tagging a transportation card like T-money.

T-money is the most widely used rechargeable prepaid transit card in Korea. Instead of buying individual tickets every time, you simply tag your card on the terminal, and the fare is automatically deducted. It is a standard transit card used daily by locals as well as foreign travelers.

  • Cashless Public Transportation: It is very difficult to use public transit without T-money.
  • Transfer Benefits: You can transfer between buses and subways without paying extra fees.

  • If you do not have a regular transit card like a T-money card or WOWPASS card, you will have to repeatedly go through the cumbersome process of 'Issuing a single-use ticket ➡️ Getting your deposit refunded at the refund machine' using the above equipment every single time you use public transportation.

🎯 2. Why T-money is Essential for Foreigners

Local Koreans can use their credit cards for public transportation because transport functions are integrated into their credit cards. However, since most foreigners do not have Korean credit cards, T-money is an absolute necessity rather than a choice.

You cannot board buses or subways without a transit card. However, if you have no plans to use public transportation (buses, subways) at all, you do not need to get one. Taxis can be paid for with credit cards or cash, as well as T-money cards.

💳 3. Are You a WOWPASS User?

The WOWPASS card already has a built-in T-money feature. Without purchasing a separate card, simply top up your T-money balance using 'Korean Won cash' at a convenience store or subway station.

The WOWPASS balance (exchange) and the T-money balance (transit card) are managed separately on a single card.

You can also top up your T-money directly at a WOWPASS kiosk

🏪 4. How to Purchase and Top Up

Convenience stores, which can be found everywhere in Korea, are the most convenient places to buy one (GS25, CU, E-Mart 24, Seven-Eleven, etc.).

  • Purchase and Top-up: Say "T-money card, please" at a convenience store and pay with cash. Nowadays, there are many cute Kakao Friends and special design editions available, so you can pick one as a nice travel souvenir.
(※ When topping up at a convenience store, only 'Korean Won cash' is accepted, so make sure to keep a small amount of emergency cash on hand!)
  • What to do if your balance is low: If your balance runs low while boarding a bus or exiting a subway gate, a warning sound will go off. Don't panic; you can resolve this immediately by topping up at a subway station charging machine or a convenience store.
  • Usage Outside Public Transit: T-money can also be used for convenience store payments! Just tap your card on the terminal when buying ramen, gimbap, beer, etc. (Payment is accepted anywhere displaying the T-money logo outside of convenience stores.)

💡 5. Boarding & Alighting Tips, Transfer Discounts, and Group Payments

🚇 How to Use the Subway:
Tag your card (T-money) at the turnstile to enter. After arriving at your destination, you must tag your card again when exiting the turnstile! If you accidentally enter the wrong gate or have to exit quickly and tap out, you might get charged double fare. In this case, press the 'Help' intercom beside the turnstile or ask a station staff member for assistance, and they will open the gate for you for free, so don't panic at all!

🚌 How to Use the Bus:
Tag your card once on the terminal when boarding the bus. You must also tag it again when getting off. If you forget to tag off, you won't receive transfer discounts and may incur an extra charge.

🔄 Transfer Discount Structure:
The biggest advantage of T-money is transfer discounts. If you transfer within a certain time window—Bus ➡️ Subway, Subway ➡️ Bus, or Bus ➡️ Bus—additional fees are significantly reduced. If you pay with cash, you cannot receive these transfer benefits at all.

🚌 Group Bus Payment: Tell the driver in advance, "Two people, please" (or "Duseong-i-yo"), and then tag your card.
🚇 No Group Sharing for Subways: Subways operate on a strict 1-card-per-person rule. (Exception: Children under 6 accompanied by a guardian can use the wide gate). Passing a single card back and forth is impossible, so make sure to prepare as many cards as there are people in your group.

👶👧 Child & Youth Fares and Free Boarding Guide for Foreign Visitors

1. Infants Under 6 Years Old (FREE / Completely Free)
• Rule: Up to 1 infant per adult guardian rides free (applies to both buses and subways)
• Subway Access: No transit card needed. Pass through the 'Wide Gate' next to the turnstile or use the intercom with your guardian.
• Bus Access: Simply inform the bus driver that you are accompanied by an infant when boarding.

2. Child & Youth Fares and Passport Registration Method
Foreign tourists without a Korean resident registration number can immediately receive discount rates onsite using just their 'Passport'.
• Adult Base Fare: Subway 1,400 KRW / Bus 1,500 KRW
• Youth (Ages 13–18): Subway 800 KRW / Bus 900 KRW
• Child (Ages 6–12): Subway 500 KRW / Bus 550 KRW
• Registration Method: When purchasing the card at a convenience store or subway station customer service center, show your passport and ask to register it for "Child rate" or "Youth rate". The clerk will input your date of birth, and the discount will be applied immediately.
(※ If you purchase without registering, adult fares will be deducted, so be sure to register your birthdate right after purchase! If convenience store staff are unfamiliar with the process, visit a subway station customer service center.)

3. Refunding Child/Youth Card Balances Before Departure
• Remaining balances under 50,000 KRW can be refunded immediately for cash at convenience stores (a 500 KRW handling fee applies).

🚖 6. Taxi Payments and Using Luggage Lockers

Taxis accept T-money, credit cards, and WOWPASS. Additionally, instead of dragging heavy luggage around, you can conveniently pay for automated luggage storage lockers located throughout subway stations using your T-money card, so make good use of them.

🎁 7. Balance Management After Trip End & Recommended Plan from a Local Driver

  • Refunds and Card Cost Structure: The initial purchase price paid when buying a T-money card is a card ownership fee, meaning this amount is non-refundable even if you return the card. However, the remaining pure top-up balance inside the card can be refunded at convenience stores (for small balances under 50,000 KRW) or subway station service centers.
  • Spending Tip: Cleanly exhaust your balance down close to 0 KRW by buying snacks at a convenience store before heading home.
  • Souvenir: Keep the remaining card as a wonderful souvenir capturing memories of your trip to Korea.

Central Seoul features many heavy traffic congestion zones, and in particular, boarding regular city buses with large luggage suitcases may be prohibited by drivers for safety reasons. Therefore, on days when you have a lot of luggage, we recommend checking subway routes equipped with elevator paths using Naver Maps or KakaoMap apps, or comfortably taking a taxi.

Make sure to pack your T-money card for public transit and plan a smart trip! Furthermore, for foreign visitors to Korea, there is an all-in-one card called 'WOWPASS' that handles not only T-money transit functions but also credit card payments and currency exchange all at once, so considering it together will make your trip much more convenient. Be sure to check it out if you want to learn more about the WOWPASS card.
