17 Seoul Travel Essentials: The Ultimate Guide to the Climate Card (Short-Term Pass) for Foreign Tourists

Must-Have for Seoul Travel: A Complete Guide to the Climate Card (Short-term Pass) - Prices, Where to Buy, and Tips

Recently, I was chatting with some international friends visiting Korea, and they shared their concerns about transportation costs. Because they aren't familiar with the local geography and the subway/bus routes can be quite complex, many tourists end up relying on taxis as their primary mode of transport. However, the cost of taking taxis everywhere in Seoul adds up quickly and can become a significant financial burden. For students or budget-conscious travelers, expensive taxi fares can definitely put a damper on the travel experience.

Relying on a standard pay-as-you-go transportation card can also be inconvenient, as the balance often runs out quickly when you are busy traveling across Seoul. In this situation, there is the perfect solution for travelers who want to explore Seoul using public transportation: the Climate Card (Short-term Pass). For travelers who use public transport multiple times a day, this unlimited pass is much more economical than a standard card that charges you for every ride. From pricing and purchase locations to essential tips, I have compiled everything you need to know to save money and explore Seoul freely.

1. Climate Card Short-term Pass: Prices and Types

This is a fixed-price pass that allows unlimited use of Seoul subways and buses licensed by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. You can choose from the following options based on your itinerary and duration of stay:

  • 1-Day Pass: 5,000 KRW
  • 2-Day Pass: 8,000 KRW
  • 3-Day Pass: 10,000 KRW
  • 5-Day Pass: 15,000 KRW
  • 7-Day Pass: 20,000 KRW

One very important point to remember: You must first purchase a physical blank card to load the pass onto, and the cost of the physical card is 3,000 KRW (sold separately). This 3,000 KRW is a one-time purchase fee to own the card, not a refundable deposit. Therefore, even if you return the card after your trip, this fee is non-refundable. For example, if you want a 3-day pass, you will need to pay 13,000 KRW in total (3,000 KRW for the card + 10,000 KRW for the 3-day pass fee).

Note: The 3,000 KRW paid for the initial card purchase is a non-refundable fee for ownership, not a deposit.

2. Recommended Pass Types by Itinerary

Here are some recommendations for which pass best fits your travel style:

  • 1-Day & 2-Day Pass: Suitable for travelers on short stays or those who have packed schedules over the weekend. It is most cost-effective if you use public transport at least four times a day. Perfect for a busy day trip or a 2-day itinerary where you travel from Gyeongbokgung Palace in the morning to Myeongdong for shopping, and finish your night at Hongdae or Hangang Park.
  • 3-Day & 5-Day Pass: The best choice for tourists on a standard 3 to 5-day trip. If you are planning to visit major spots like Jongno and Gangnam, as well as hotspots slightly further away like Seongsu-dong or Lotte World, this pass is highly convenient as you won't need to recharge your card repeatedly.
  • 7-Day Pass: An excellent option for long-term travelers or those visiting Seoul for a mix of business and leisure. For just 20,000 KRW, you can enjoy maximum mobility for an entire week without worrying about transportation costs.

3. Where to Buy, How to Top-up, and Convenient Tips

There is no online pre-booking system for the Climate Card short-term pass. You must purchase it offline upon arrival in Korea. Convenience stores sell only the physical blank cards for 3,000 KRW, meaning you would still have to visit a subway station afterward to top up your card. To save time, it is most convenient to handle everything directly at a Seoul subway station.

★ Recommended Convenient Route ★

  1. Visit the Customer Safety Office (Station Office) inside any Seoul subway station (Lines 1-8) to purchase the physical card for 3,000 KRW.
  2. Once you have the card, head to the Unmanned Transport Card Loading Machine (Kiosk) located within the station.
  3. Place your card on the reader, select your desired duration, and pay to top it up. It will be ready for immediate use.

Note that while you can buy the card at convenience stores near subway stations, you cannot top it up there. Also, convenience stores outside of Seoul (Incheon, Gyeonggi-do) do not sell these cards, so please be aware.

4. Payment Methods: Cash and Credit Cards

In the past, you could only top up cards at subway stations using Korean Won (cash). Now, the system has been upgraded to accept various payment methods.

  • When purchasing the initial physical card (3,000 KRW) at a station office or convenience store, both cash and credit cards are accepted.
  • When topping up your pass at the station kiosk, you can now use not only Korean cash but also internationally issued credit/debit cards and mobile payments (Naver Pay, Kakao Pay, etc.). Please note that using an international card may incur a small service fee depending on the payment provider's regulations.

5. Essential Precautions and Scope of Use

This card is designed exclusively for travelers moving primarily within Seoul. There are strict limitations when using it outside of Seoul city limits.

  • Seoul Region Only: The unlimited benefits apply only to Seoul subways and buses licensed in Seoul. You cannot use this card for Gyeonggi-do buses, Incheon city buses, the Shinbundang Line, or wide-area buses. Make sure to check if your route stays within the Seoul city center.
  • Not valid for Incheon Airport: This card cannot be used for the Airport Railroad (AREX) to get to or from Incheon Airport. The card will not work at the airport station gates. Therefore, when traveling from Incheon Airport to your accommodation in Seoul for the first time, you should use a standard T-money card or purchase a separate ticket for the Airport Railroad.

Summary

If you want to save on expensive taxi fares and explore Seoul efficiently by using its excellent public transportation system, the Climate Card (Short-term Pass) is your best choice. With options ranging from a 1-day to a 7-day pass, you can choose the one that perfectly fits your itinerary and travel smartly.
