Welcome to Korea! Arriving in a new country can feel daunting, especially when you are trying to find reliable transportation. As an active, veteran taxi driver in Korea, I have compiled this essential guide to help foreign travelers enjoy a safe, comfortable, and scam-free journey from Incheon Airport to Seoul.
*Important: In Korea, commercial vehicle license plates are yellow. Any license plate that is not yellow is illegal.
[Uber/Kakao T App Taxi Calling Rules for Terminal 1 & 2]
When you arrive at Incheon Airport, you will exit through either Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. If you come out of the 1st-floor arrivals gate, you will immediately see taxis parked in a long line across from you (across the crosswalk).
However, wait! If you plan to call a taxi using the Uber or Kakao T app, you should not walk to the general taxi waiting line.
App-called taxis have different pickup locations to prevent traffic congestion. For both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, you must walk to the far right end or the far left end of the taxi platform area. There, you will find the dedicated pickup and waiting zones for app-called taxis (Uber Taxi, Kakao Taxi).

- How to use: First, move to the far end of the platform, then open the app, call the taxi, and wait for the driver!
- Destination to move to: After exiting the 1st-floor gate, cross the crosswalk and go to the far right end or the far left end.
- If the general taxi waiting line is long, you can get to your accommodation or desired destination faster than others by using an Uber or Kakao Taxi instead of waiting blindly at the taxi stand.

In Korea, you can naturally hail a taxi by waving your hand on the street, but during rush hour, on rainy days, late at night, or on weekends, it is as difficult as finding a needle in a haystack to catch an empty taxi on the street if you do not use a mobile app. Because most local passengers and drivers are matched via apps, empty taxis on the road are often already reserved, making it very difficult to catch a taxi on the street.
When you call a taxi via an app, you can check the estimated fare to your destination, which helps prevent potential scams. As of 2026, over 90% of local taxi drivers do not drive around as empty taxis looking for passengers, but instead wait in alleys or on streets until a call comes in. That is why it is even more essential to use a taxi application.
Therefore, I strongly recommend that you install the Uber or Kakao T app on your smartphone and register your card before entering Korea.
💡 Interesting Facts about Uber in Korea (A Professional Driver's Tip)
Those from the US or Europe might expect a random private person to drive their personal car to pick you up when you call an Uber. However, Korea is completely different. Commercial operation of personal private vehicles (carpooling, etc.) is strictly prohibited by law.
When you call an Uber in Korea, a professional taxi driver who holds a formal taxi operation license and is registered with the government (a driver just like me!) will safely come to pick you up. You are using the familiar Uber app, but in reality, you are riding the safest, most official taxi. Please use the existing Uber app you have always used with peace of mind and comfort in Korea.
In Korea, Kakao T has the number one market share. However, you will encounter difficult situations if you only have the Kakao T app.
Because you must use Uber at times when calls are pouring in (times when it is hard to catch a taxi), I hope you download the Uber app even if you use the Kakao T app, or vice versa.

There is a most important rule you must remember to protect yourself from taxi scams and overcharging in Korea. Legitimate taxi drivers licensed in South Korea never negotiate fares with passengers or suggest an amount first.
All legitimate taxis operate strictly using the meter installed inside the vehicle. The fare is calculated automatically by the machine according to the distance traveled and time taken. If a driver approaches you inside the airport terminal or near the taxi stand and suggests a fixed price (e.g., "70,000 won to Myeong-dong!"), they are 100% illegal "Narashi" (unlicensed) vehicles. Do not get in, and move away immediately.

Do not be embarrassed if the meter fare rises faster at night than during the day! Korea has a "late-night" additional surcharge system in effect from 10 PM to 4 AM. Please refer to the schedule below as the surcharge rate varies by time:
- 10:00 PM – 11:00 PM: 20% surcharge
- 11:00 PM – 02:00 AM: 40% surcharge (The most expensive time!)
- 02:00 AM – 04:00 AM: 20% surcharge
During these late-night hours, the base fare and distance-based fare become more expensive, so more money is charged than in the daytime. It is good to be aware of these fare changes in advance when arriving at the airport late at night.

[Capacity and Luggage Restrictions for Standard Taxis]
Before you go to take a taxi, please calculate the number of people in your party and the amount of luggage. This is a point where many foreign tourists are caught off guard on the spot.
- Standard Taxi Capacity: Maximum 4 passengers.
- Luggage Space: Most Korean standard taxis are sedans, so the trunk can only hold about 2 large immigration/travel bags or large carriers.

It is physically impossible to fit all of them into one standard sedan taxi. As it is impossible, you must choose one of the following two methods:
- Call a Large Van Taxi: Call an 'Uber Venti' or 'Kakao Venti' through the app. 4 people and their heavy luggage will fit comfortably at once.
- Split into Two Taxis: It is much easier to split your party into two, with 2 people and 2 suitcases in each taxi.

What should you do if you accidentally take an illegal taxi and the driver manipulates the meter or demands an unfair fare? Do not be alarmed, and do not waste your emotions by arguing with the driver on the side of the road.
